East Fife 0-4 Rangers. "Perfect Day"

A few years ago I read a book about Ajax from Louis Van Gaal. There was talk of moving in the pitch forming triangles. Triangles all over the field. Each player was a vertex and had to have two passing options. It was the key. It was the best way to play and be well placed and secure when they lost the ball. If you lost someone was always behind the ball because the triangles helped preserve the position. The commitment to get the ball played from behind led to constant losses and the desire to get as quickly to the opponent´s are turned in precipitation. To make progress in that we must be precise in passing, so the ball does not move, and anticipate the moves to come. That requires ubiquitous factor.  Being in the right place at the right time. This requires coordination and work in the week. In one of the first plays Nicky Law missed the ball by not foresee the consequences of playing out and not expect the pressure ahead of rivals.

We could not start from the bottom. Foster sent a ball, a little forced, to Peralta in the middle. The Honduran had to back with Jig and then Foster sent a long ball that came close to being connected by Clark. In this example can be seen the need to calm down and restart the game without throwing a long ball, keep trying. I do not intend to give up one of the basic principles, that of box to box, that defined direct game is be witnessed in the rival area with everything. I am not in favor of abuse of that resource.

Sometimes having the ball and make decisions with the ball is much more complicated because the ball can make you weak if you cannot or know how to distribute. But take the initiative, take control of the game through the pass, is still the best way to play football.

Hace algunos años yo leía un libro sobre el Ajax de Louis Van Gaal. Allí hablaba de moverse en el terreno de juego formando triángulos. Triángulos por todo el campo. Cada jugador era un vértice y debía tener dos opciones de pase. Era la clave. Era la mejor manera de jugar y de estar bien colocados y seguros cuando perdían la pelota. Si la perdías siempre había alguien por detrás de la pelota porque los triángulos ayudaban a conservar la posición. La apuesta por sacar la pelota jugada desde atrás derivó en pérdidas constantes y las ganas por llegar lo más rápidamente al área rival se volvían en precipitación. Para poder progresar en eso hay que ser preciso en los pases, no trasladar tanto la pelota, y anticiparse a las jugadas que vendrán. Eso requiere del factor de ubicuidad. Estar en el lugar indicado en el momento exacto. Eso requiere coordinación y trabajo en la semana. En una de las primeras jugadas Nicky Law perdió la pelota por no prever las consecuencias de salir jugando y no esperar la presión delante de los rivales.

No podíamos comenzar desde el fondo. Foster envió una pelota, un poco forzada, a Peralta en el medio. El hondureño tuvo que retroceder con Jig y luego Foster envió una pelota larga, que estuvo cerca de ser conectada por Clark. En este ejemplo se puede ver la necesidad de serenarse y reiniciar el juego sin tirar una pelota larga, seguir intentándolo. Yo tampoco propongo renunciar a uno de los principios básicos, el del box to box, ese definido por el juego directo que consiste en presenciarse en el área rival con todo. Yo no estoy en favor del abuso de ese recurso.

Algunas veces tener la pelota y tomar decisiones con la pelota es muchísimo más complicado porque la pelota te puede hacer débil si no puedes o sabes  cómo distribuirla. Hay que disciplinarse mucho para no caer en errores cuando tienes la pelota. Pero tener la iniciativa, tener el control del partido a través del pase, sigue siendo la mejor manera de jugar al fútbol.

En el primer tiempo se nos resistió el pase horizontal, la descarga del juego por las zonas con menos tráfico, la oxigenación del fútbol. El Rangers cargó el juego por el ala de Wallace e intentó gobernar la contienda por sobre un mediocampo difícil como el local. East Fife, un equipo aguerrido en el primer tiempo, obstruyó la circulación de nuestra pelota poniendo marcas en nuestros receptores. Atosigándolos cuando recibían la pelota,  concedió pocos espacios para las carreras de Clark. El ex atacante de Queens of the South siguió a lo suyo, incisivo, vertical, valiente. 

La idea era taponar nuestro juego.  Willie Atchison planteó de ayudas y solidaridad, una apuesta incómoda para nosotros (por lo menos durante el primer tiempo). Aunque eso les generaba gran desgaste, apenas dejaba espacio para la elaboración de nuestro juego y resquicios para llegar al área. Buchanan se movió con libertad, estaba en todas. Cuando encontró el espacio disparó desde afuera del área, Bell voló, pero la pelota se fue lejos. Así anunciaba East Fife, que tenía intenciones de no quedar como simple decorado de ocasión. 

Nicky Law se perdió entre la maraña de jugadores rivales, sin desequilibrar con el regate, sin romper con el pase, ni estar acertado con el remate. Law no encuentra el tacto, la continuidad en el juego y la pegada que lo caracterizaron en los primeros pasajes de la temporada.  Excesivamente entregado a más deberes defensivos, algunas veces escoge la opción errónea por definición, quizá la más difícil, a veces la más inverosímil. El equipo lo necesita. Con Law en sus tribulaciones ¿Cuál es nuestro hilo conductor? La tendencia de los equipos de McCoist es que el desafío se imponga entonces a la precaución. La vía puede ser discutible, pero el manager pone todos sus recursos a trabajar en la reparación de la ausencia. 

Black comenzó cubriendo parte de esa ausencia y lo compensó con su despliegue, casi siempre bien colocado, batallador, puntual en cada pelota dividida, permanentemente dispuesto a echar una mano.

Cuando McLeod recibió en las zonas calientes, era encimado por los defensores. Por eso, tuvo que retrasar su posición. En su posición original podía acceder a cuentagotas a la pelota, con muchos rivales alrededor, sin posibilidad de crear o filtrar algún pase. Algunas veces, el retroceso sirve para desconcertar a los rivales, que previamente tienen asignada una marca o una posición que cubrir. El retroceso en el terreno redunda en mayor espacio para ocupar, pero algunas veces un obstáculo para el compañero. Pero el factor de complementariedad McLeod/Wallace, yo no voy a descubrirlo hoy.

Moshni, sin concesiones, realizaba pases en profundidad para explotar la velocidad de Clark o asociaba con Wallace, incorporándose al mediocampo, para comenzar el ataque, evitando el tráfico del mediocampo. En otra oportunidad, él dominó la pelota y encaró. Más allá de algunas lagunas defensivas, ofrece un fútbol chispeante, atrevido y muy moderno. Moshni es uno de esos defensores que saben jugar al fútbol y que tienen ojo para la posición.

Law, tras el descanso, trató de buscar protagonismo con apoyos al centro del campo, pero sin resultados tangibles. Su labor brilló un poco más por la orden de Super-Ally de adelantarse de la línea defensiva. Es decir, tuvo un poco más de espacio para generar las posibilidades de percutir desde la segunda línea. Esta decisión trajo buenos resultados momentáneos. Además su sociedad con McLeod aportó un plus cualitativo.

¿Cómo comienza a destrabarse el partido? ¿La tendencia azarosa del fútbol hizo cambiar el guion? Acertamos no sólo por convicción sino también porque East Fife aceptó el intercambio de golpes y quedó muy desnudo. Wallace, un jugador que ha madurado con los años y selecciona con acierto cuándo percutir en campo ajeno. Habilidoso con la pelota en los pies, yo no descubro nada, su regate en largo solio ser bien dañino. Lee, con oídos parabólicos, cerebro alerta, envía un cruce, siempre peligroso, Thom quiere anticiparse a Daly con tanta mala suerte que conectó la pelota y anotó en propia puerta. 0-1.

A los pocos minutos, con el Rangers trasladando la pelota y cambiando de frente en búsqueda de opciones encuentra el segundo gol. Peralta envió un centro impresionantes, como esos misiles que tardan en caer, que todos miran como impresionados, esperando el inexorable desenlace. Daly oteó el vuelo de la pelota y, sin saltar (no era necesario para él) la cazó con la cabeza sin dejarla caer, rumbo al borde del área pequeña, dejando sin ninguna posibilidad al arquero. 0-2. Dotado de unos reflejos felinos, Daly hace diferencias. Es uno de esos jugadores que anidan en el área siempre con la vista en el cielo. Poderosísimo en el remate de cabeza.

En la tarde, el Skipper, un tipo con coraje y personalidad, puso la pausa y el pase, cuando no la filigrana, la mejor manera de frenar a un equipo que exhibía su musculatura. Virtuoso en la lectura del juego, optó por el cambio de orientación, arma poco incisiva pero suficientes para hacer llegar la pelota a la próxima línea. Pero igualmente, el Rangers, recibía visitas indeseables por el medio.

¿Dónde comienza el tercer gol? Cuando Black corta un ataque rival desde las puertas de nuestra área y envía un pase al "iniciador serial" Wallace que traslada con precisión y velocidad. Cede la pelota a Law, cuyo poder de nexo fue bastante efectivo en el segundo tiempo. En un costado estaba Daly para recibir, una vez que tiene la pelota, la retrocede para Peralta. Otro centro del hondureño llega precisamente a Clark, que envía de cabeza a Daly, que a la vez cabecea al arco. 0-3. Daly fue el Rey Midas, que todo lo que tocó lo convirtió en oro. El irlandés no juega de boya estática, ya que acompaña el juego, sino también que remata todo lo que llega al área.

El sentido táctico del fútbol que tiene Black y la movilidad de Wallace fueron suficientes para controlar el choque sin problema. Mejor o peor plasmado, el juego entrelineas de McLeod y la velocidad de Wallace y Clark desestabilizaron a the Fifers. Porque a Wallace nada lo frena. Ni siquiera el sentido común, la falta de espacios, las leyes de la física. Su fútbol se ha demostrado tan populista como efectivo. En el vértigo, hay jugadores capaces de domesticar la pelota cuando parece una quimera. McLeod es uno de ellos, no hay imposibles para él, únicamente le faltó el regate para culminar una buena actuación. A un kilométrico servicio de Wallace, Lewis hizo una maniobra múltiple: con el cuerpo bloqueó a un defensor de mayor carrocería para proteger la pelota al tiempo que se procuró un control orientado hacia Law, que pateó en posición cómoda, la intervención de Patterson quitó el gol y en el rebote Peralta envió la pelota a las nubes.

Apartado para Peralta. En realidad el debate no es Peralta sino las posiciones que ocupa en el terreno. Lo que lleva esto a un lugar más lejano, a unas cuentas pendientes: las decisiones del manager y/o sus asistentes. Yo creo que el hasta ahora desconocido Peralta fue firmado por el Rangers para jugar en distintas posiciones, por su capacidad de adaptación a distintos momentos de juego. Esto lleva a otro lugar, el de las rotaciones o desdoblamientos de funciones. En la pizarra hay que mover las fichas para generar alternativas, imaginar opciones, cambiar de lados, medir aptitudes. El hondureño ha sabido sacar provecho de su capacidad para tirar centro con precisión, calibrados. En el primer tiempo, en una jugada a pelota parada envió un centro para la cabeza de Clark, que contuvo Patterson. Su generosidad defensiva, además, le hace fundamental en un costado donde Foster podría animarse al ataque, como lo hacía Kyle McCausland en el inicio de la temporada.

Recomenzamos unos de esos trances. La pelota es nuestra, circula de un costado al otro, la búsqueda sinuosa del espacio, del hueco o de ese virtuoso que marque la diferencia. La pelota llega a Foster, que intenta imitar a Peralta. Un centro para McLeod, de esos futbolistas capaces de burlar a un rival en el mano a mano, tira un centro rasante para Daly, que anota el hat-trick sin oposición. 0-4.
