The Fightback Starts Here. It was one of those unforgettable days, some rejoicing after heavy storms and monsoons in recent times. Nuestra superioridad contra East Fife fue evidente de principio a fin. Y el planteo táctico con tres defensores (Broadfoot a la derecha, Goian en el centro y Bocanegra a la izquierda) ya dilucidaba un propósito ofensivo, adelantar las líneas en el terreno de juego. Aunque en principio me sorprendió, Shiels reemplazó a Kyle Hutton (para mi, el mejor en Glebe Park), pero el lugar de éste en el campo fue tomado por Black, en un juego que se caracterizó por una interesante dinámica de rotaciones. Hubo puestos fijos, pero los desplazamientos y las coberturas hacían que tanto Black como McLeod cruzaran de un lado al otro a asistir a sus compañeros. 

En muchos aspectos, Black realizó el rol de Hutton, se mostraba para recibir la pelota, no se escondió, ordenó a los compañeros, presionó y recuperó la pelota (un valor que nosotros necesitamos insistentemente la temporada pasada). Aquí voy a destacar a Lewis McLeod. Yo no suelo ser partidario de las pelotas largas, pero la precisión que tiene Lewis me deja con la boca abierta, cada pelota larga tenía un compañero, eso fue increíble. En este caso, él no pateó sin saber quién iba a recibir la pelota. Este muchacho, con sus pelotazos reduce algunas instancias del juego y facilita la transición del centro del campo.  Una de las acciones fue como un misil teledirigido a JIG, que bajó de cabeza para Wallace en unos de los primeros ataques del match.

Otra de las novedades fue el cambio de ritmo que se generó con la inclusión de Dean Shiels. El Norirlandés retrocedió para buscar la pelota, no se quedó parado esperando que lo abastezcan. Aunque con características de juego diferentes, Dean me hizo acordar a Caniggia. Claudio solía retroceder para recibir la pelota e iniciar los ataques.  En esa estrategia, Dean fue bastante generoso, creando nexos con Black, buscando a Wallace por la derecha, o provocando acciones ofensivas con Lee McCulloch. En la estructura del centro del campo, Andrew Little jugó muy pegado en la banda derecha (por momentos, él se iba hacia el centro en búsqueda de más juego colectivo), mientras que la izquierda, ya es patrimonio de Lee Wallace, aunque en el primer tiempo tuvo la cohabitación de “The Road Runner” McKay. En el primer tiempo, Barry retrocedió para hacerse con la pelota en un espacio del campo congestionado de Fifers ante la peligrosa presencia de Wallace.

La estrategia del East Fife era esperar, creando una barrera virtual a nuestros ataques. Algo a lo que nosotros tendremos que acostumbrarnos en los próximos tiempos. La construcción del juego para vulnerar al rival requiere de una distribución de la pelota hasta encontrar el hueco, en esa instancia no hay que perder la calma, buscar hasta llegar a descifrar la clave. Shiels fue de los primeros que vulneró la defensa cuando tiró un centro perfecto, como accionado a control remoto, para que Little cabeceara y el arquero Brown se luciera tirando la pelota al córner. Al poco tiempo llegó el primer gol. Black contiene la pelota hasta ver a McKay desmarcado, pase a Shiels que ve a JIG preparado, frotándose las manos…y sólo ante el arquero anota 1-0.

Aunque los Fifers no atacaban mucho. La mayor parte de las veces sus ataques eran producto de errores nuestros, faltas de concentración. Más allá que el match estaba controlado. El segundo gol vendría pronto: La acción es producto de la velocidad de Barry, tras un rebote la pelota queda para Shiels. El debutante pica la pelota ante la presurosa salida del arquero. 2-0. Excelente debut. Pongamos stop en la pantalla y déjenme contarles algo que pudo haber pasado desapercibido. Yo les recomiendo a ustedes que vuelvan a mirar el festejo del gol. Ahí, ustedes verán la importancia de JIG para el plantel, se acercó a Barry para señalarlo y luego premiarlo.

En el segundo tiempo, una de los cambios posicionales más importantes fue el traslado de Barry a la derecha y tuvo sus primeros frutos cuando él emprendió una gran corrida, avanzó hasta llegar al área, Shiels disparó desde 20 yardas y Brown, otra vez, dio rebote. Allí fue el momento de Wallace. 3-0. Mucho se habla por estas horas sobre la decisión (errada) de Craig Levein de no incluir a Wallace entre los convocados para jugar contra Australia. Ya McCoist se expresó públicamente al respecto, y yo estoy de acuerdo con él. Yo creo que en la actualidad, no hay en Escocia mejor lateral izquierdo que Wallace.  El resto son tonterías burocráticas. ¿Jugar en la tercera división no vale? Para mi cualquier categoría es un desafío distinto, se juega bajo distintas condiciones. Al fin de cuentas, Wallace representa hoy lo mejor de Escocia y eso está fuera de dudas.

McCulloch cerró la cuenta en cuatro.
