Steven Davis celebrated signing a new five-year contract with Ranges by scoring twice in their friendly victory over Blackpool last night. The Northern Ireland international could have left Ibrox for free at the end of the season, with no shortage of admirers in the English Premier League, but his love for Rangers and his family’s happiness means Glasgow is where he wants to be.
Certainly, all associated with Rangers would be delighted if he maintained the standard shown against Blackpool, before being replaced by young Thomas Kind Bendiksen at half-time.
Davis spent much of last season in a cycle of self-criticism before bursting back to peak form in the Co-operative Insurance Cup Final win over Celtic.
A key complaint had been the lack of goals he had produced, but he warmed up for the new campaign by suggesting that won’t be a problem this time around.
His opening goal arrived after 35 minutes as Rangers broke rapidly after thwarting a Blackpool corner. New arrival Ortiz was the architect, bolting down the left flank before delivering a cross that allowed Davis to beat goalkeeper Matt Gilks from eight yards.
A minute before the interval, it was 2-0. A poor pass from Matt Hill gifted Rangers possession, with Steven Naismith and Nikica Jelavic involved before Davis took over. He showed quick feet to evade a couple of weak tackles before angling a right-foot finish past Gilks.
