A vital victory

 

 

 

Rangers threw the SPL title race wide open as they moved to within two points of Celtic with a game in hand after a 2-1 win over Kilmarnock. With their rivals not in action this weekend - Celtic's Scottish Cup tie at Inverness was postponed - the Scottish champions were well aware of the importance of taking maximum points. With another extra game to play, the champions' destiny is still very much in their own hands with 11 matches to go.

An own goal just four minutes from full-time gave Rangers a vital victory as they ground out a gritty win over Kilmarnock. El-Hadji Diouf put the Light Blues ahead in the first half with his second goal for the club but the visitors levelled with a debatable Jamie Hamill penalty. Gers weren't to be denied though and substitute Vladimir Weiss forced Tim Clancy into scoring past his own keeper in a pulsating closing sequence.

Now Rangers will prepare for huge games against PSV Eindhoven in the Europa League and Celtic in the League Cup final this week. With key players available again following injuries, it wasn't a great surprise to see Smith shuffle his pack ahead of those meetings with PSV and Celtic.

Nikica Jelavic and Sasa Papac both returned to the first XI, while Allan McGregor was back in goals again after warming the bench in Eindhoven. That meant Kyle Hutton, Kyle Lafferty and Neil Alexander all dropped out, with each of the trio taking a place on the bench.

Un gol en contra a cuatro minutos del final del partido dio al Rangers una victoria vital, ya que en el campo fue difícil ganar al Kilmarnock. El-Hadji Diouf puso a los Light Blues por delante en la primera mitad con su segundo gol en el club, pero los visitantes empataron con un discutible penal de Jamie Hamill. Los Gers no iban a negarse y el sustituto Vladimir Weiss obligó a Tim Clancy a anotar en propia puerta en una secuencia final vibrante.

Ahora Rangers prepararán para los importantes partidos contra el PSV Eindhoven en la Europa League y contra el Celtic en la final de League Cup. Con jugadores claves disponibles otra vez después de las lesiones, no será una gran sorpresa ver a Smith acudir a este pack de cara a los encuentros con PSV y Celtic.
