Rangers’ assistant-manager Ally McCoist holds the record for the most winners’ medals for a player in the tournament, collecting nine between 1983 and 1996. McCoist, 48, scored all his side’s goal during their 3-2 win over Celtic in 1983/84, making him the last player to notch a hat-trick in an Old Firm game.

Derek Johnstone became the youngest-ever matchwinner when he scored the only goal for Rangers against Celtic in the 1970/71 final aged 16 years and 355 days.

Este jueves, el PSV dio un paso gigante en un templo del fútbol británico Ibrox Park, sabiendo que necesitaba anotar allí tras el 0-0 de Eindhoven. El gol de la clasificación holandesa fue marcado a los 14 minutos del primer tiempo por Jeremain Lens. Un partido jugado a un ritmo lento y predecible al igual que el primero de la serie.

RANGERS manager Walter Smith last night laid the blame for his team's Europa League exit firmly at the door of Austrian referee Robert Schorgenhofer and his team of match officials.

 

 

The incident was a 61st-minute handball by PSV's Canadian midfielder Atiba Hutchinson as he cleared a Maurice Edu shot off the line. Neither Schorgenhofer or any of his assistants, including the one behind the goal as part of Uefa's continuing experiment, spotted the offence.

 

 

The game's most controversial incident arrived just after the hour mark, however, when Steven Naismith saw his header crash back off the bar. Maurice Edu then pounced on the loose ball and saw his netbound shot handled on the line by PSV defender Atiba Hutchinson - only for Austrian referee Robert Schorgenhofer to wave play on.

 

On Thursday, PSV took a giant step into a temple of British football Ibrox Park, knowing that I needed there after the 0-0 record in Eindhoven. The Dutch classification goal was scored on 14 minutes the first time by Jeremain Lens. A game played at a slow pace and predictable as the first of the series. Smith watched his side lose 1-0 to PSV Eindhoven in the last 16 of the Europa League before 35,373 spectators, including Craig Whyte, the businessman whose attempt to take over the club is said to be a crucial stage. The impact of the blow on Rangers was palpable. Caught in two minds between their desire to respond and the ingrained habit of sitting tight and waiting for the chance to hit on the break, they did neither.  Like a boa constrictor, the Dutch league leaders squeezed tight and threatened at times to suck any resistance from Walter Smith’s side. From the embers of a burning European campaign, however, Rangers can take heart from much of this.

Kyle Lafferty’s departure on a stretcher will surely rule him out of Sunday’s Co-operative Insurance Cup Final against Celtic, while Kyle Bartley also limped off with a knee injury. But the return of Steven Naismith as a second-half substitute and the emergence of Gregg Wylde as a bona fide starting option will offset the loss.

For a while, though, in the build-up it, seemed as if both Rangers and PSV Eindhoven were viewing the prospect of a European quarter-final with all the enthusiasm of a child faced with a plateful of greens. Ugh, they both seemed to be thinking, do we have to? Frankly, it looked as if the Europa League was a distraction they could really do without. Both clubs have a league championship to pursue – and with it the chance to return to the Champions League where the real money can be made – while Rangers have pressing matters to attend to this weekend.

Smith changed his 5-4-1 formation to a 4-5-1 after PSV dominated the first half and the Rangers manager said the withdrawal of David Weir for Steven Naismith was a purely tactical move. The empty seats, not many but gaps were noticeable in each of the four stands, told their own story. You could have strolled up to Ibrox five minutes before kick-off last night and still got in. Try doing that at Hampden on Sunday.

Rangers will watch ruefully, wishing they too were still involved, before gradually turning their attention to Sunday’s match. Criticism of the display will likely follow. Nobody can say, though, that they didn’t care.

In time, Walter Smith and Rangers may come to regard this Europa League exit as a blessing. However, their frustration lingered long and weary.

Rangers pressed for the elusive two goals to send them through however they couldn’t find a way past the PSV defence which was solid for the most part all evening.

Rangers’ gameplan in Holland last week was exactly what we expected: five men at the back, four in midfield, and a lone striker upfront receiving little support. The goalless draw was hardly a surprise either, thanks to a combination of cautious football from the away side, and wasteful finishing from PSV.

The defensive organisation Rangers showed was impressive throughout the 90 minutes. The three centre-backs dealt with Marcus Berg, the wing-backs kept Jeremain Lens and Balazs Dzsudzsak relatively quiet, and deep-lying forward Ola Toivonen was nullified by Rangers keeping the lines of midfield and defence very close together, denying him time on the ball.

Such a defensive-minded performance can be difficult to sustain for 90 minutes, but Rangers looked comfortable. Concentration levels can drop when physical fitness drops, but Rangers only tried to pressure PSV in the final 30 yards of the pitch, so it wasn’t an overwhelmingly difficult game physically. The slow tempo PSV played at also helped, moving the ball slowly from side to side, allowing Rangers to shift across the pitch gradually.

It will be interesting to see how Rangers adapt to playing the second leg at home. Smith admitted that they’re used to the situation being the other way around. Caution remains a key part of Smith’s strategy. “We have to approach the game with the same care, the same concentration”, he said. “It's about finding the right balance between attacking and defending and that will be difficult, but we will have to attack if we want to make progress.” Smith’s comments suggest that he will take the safety-first approach into the second leg.

The main tactical question regards what formation Smith will play. Against Sporting in the previous round, he played a 4-4-1-1 system with Diouf just behind Lafferty at Ibrox, but it wouldn’t be surprise to see him stick with the 5-4-1 for the second leg here. That would ensure a steady start to the game, and would enable Rangers to switch to a more attacking system later on. Smith qualifies his attacking intent with the ‘if the game opens up’ phrase, suggesting he will keep it tight early on, and then gamble in the second half.

As always with Rangers in Europe, it’s difficult to predict team selection but there’s no reason why Smith will make sweeping changes from the side that contested the first leg. The one caveat is that he might want more pace and natural attacking threat from the wings. With Sasa Papac back at left-back, Steven Whittaker may revert to the right of midfield, with Steven Davis moving into the centre.

Walter Smith faces a dilemma over whether to field comeback striker Steven Naismith against PSV Eindhoven tonight — or keep him for Sunday’s Cooperative Insurance Cup Final against Celtic at Hampden. The Scotland international is fit again after overcoming the hamstring problems which have troubled him since Christmas.

Out of action since February 20, however, Naismith is not yet ready to play against both PSV and Celtic — leaving his manager with a choice to make ahead of a Europa League second leg finely balanced at 0-0.

McCoist targets Bartley as first signing

Ally McCoist has asked Arsenal if they would be willing to extend Kyle Bartley's loan deal at Rangers by another full season. The Ibrox assistant manager, who takes charge from Walter Smith in May, has been impressed by the 19-year-old defender's contribution since joining in January. McCoist is desperate to strengthen his side with more summer cost-cutting expected. (Daily Record).

Rangers threw the SPL title race wide open as they moved to within two points of Celtic with a game in hand after a 2-1 win over Kilmarnock. With their rivals not in action this weekend - Celtic's Scottish Cup tie at Inverness was postponed - the Scottish champions were well aware of the importance of taking maximum points. With another extra game to play, the champions' destiny is still very much in their own hands with 11 matches to go.

An own goal just four minutes from full-time gave Rangers a vital victory as they ground out a gritty win over Kilmarnock. El-Hadji Diouf put the Light Blues ahead in the first half with his second goal for the club but the visitors levelled with a debatable Jamie Hamill penalty. Gers weren't to be denied though and substitute Vladimir Weiss forced Tim Clancy into scoring past his own keeper in a pulsating closing sequence.

Now Rangers will prepare for huge games against PSV Eindhoven in the Europa League and Celtic in the League Cup final this week. With key players available again following injuries, it wasn't a great surprise to see Smith shuffle his pack ahead of those meetings with PSV and Celtic.

Nikica Jelavic and Sasa Papac both returned to the first XI, while Allan McGregor was back in goals again after warming the bench in Eindhoven. That meant Kyle Hutton, Kyle Lafferty and Neil Alexander all dropped out, with each of the trio taking a place on the bench.

A farewell flourish in Dublin, of all places, remains a possibility for Walter Smith, who would take his leave of Rangers in the Europa League final should the Ibrox side make it that far, but the manager – who retires at the end of this season – is not harbouring thoughts of a trip to the Irish capital and a second European final in three years.

Walter Smith has admitted it will be a 'tall order' for Rangers to challenge Celtic in the SPL due to their European exertions.  Rangers are only five points adrift of their Glasgow rivals with two games in hand, leaving their destiny in their own hands. However, the Ibrox side are still involved in continental competition and Smith recognises how difficult it will be to juggle the demands. Having put themselves in a decent position to progress to the Europa League quarter-finals with a goalless draw at PSV Eindhoven on Thursday night, Smith is hopeful of going all the way to the final as Rangers did in the 2008 Uefa Cup.Some fans and observers have begun to compare this season’s run to the team’s exploits in 2008, when they played a total of 19 European games, culminating in a 2-0 defeat by Zenit St Petersburg in Manchester. Smith, though, does not view the two campaigns as parallels. “Dublin has not crossed my mind,” he said. “The previous time, once we started to get on a run in the Uefa Cup and with the players we had then, you started to think it might be possible - with a bit of luck.

He is refusing to prioritise, but admits another lengthy stint in Europe could define this year's domestic challenge against Celtic, who exited European competition in August."It's a tall order for us if we continue to play in Europe, I think that might be a factor depending on how our situation develops," Smith said.

"Basically we are going to have to go on an exceptional run of wins to get the championship."I think there will be points dropped for all the clubs but Celtic went on a long run before losing to Motherwell. "I think we will have to emulate that if we're going to be champions."

Rangers have seen their ability to handle fixture congestion affected by cuts to the size of their squad, which has been stretched further by a glut of injuries, although Nikica Jelavic and Sasa Papac are both set to return against Kilmarnock on Sunday.

Happy birthday for Neil Alexander

Neil Alexander hailed his surprise Europa League start against PSV Eindhoven as the perfect birthday present. The goalkeeper, who turned 33 on Thursday night, was given the nod for the last 16 clash in Holland and repaid boss Walter Smith's faith by helping to earn Rangers a goalless draw.
The result means Rangers now have a great opportunity to progress in front of a packed house at Ibrox next week. Alexander said: "A clean sheet is one of the best birthday presents I could have asked for today.
"It was a really important game for the club and it was important that I went out there and did my best and try to get a result. We would have taken that 0-0 before the game.

El PSV Eindhoven se estrelló frente a la muralla defensiva desplegada por el Rangers FC. La defensa del Rangers aguantaba las acometidas del equipo local e incomodaba a los delanteros del PSV, y en los últimos minutos el equipo escocés estiró sus líneas en busca de algún contragolpe peligroso que le diera el gol de la victoria. El PSV nunca desesperó en busca de un tanto que le diera ciertas garantías para el partido de vuelta, pero finalmente no lo consiguió, y el duelo en Ibrox de la próxima semana decidirá qué equipo alcanza los cuartos de final.
