Jelavic wonder goal edges Gers closer to leaders Celtic

Si los músculos de Nikica Jelavic son más grandes ahora que cuando fichó por el Rangers no es una sorpresa: ha tomado el hábito de conducir el equipo completo por su cuenta. Un gol en la final de la Co-operative Insurance Cup el mes pasado y en la última semana tuvo la misión de mantener la lucha por el Clydesdale Bank Premier League. Consiguió el único gol para la victoria el fin de semana y lo hizo nuevamente anoche. Esta vez con una definición excelente. Una impresionante definición en el área de Jelavic, su 11 gol en 13 SPL para el vigente campeón, dio al Rangers una preciosa victoria en Pittodrie. Esta fue su cuarto gol en cinco juegos, tres de ellos victorias. Las lesiones perjudicaron la primera temporada de Jelavic en Escocia, pero discretamente ha reunido estadísticas impresionantes. Después de un tiro libre de Steven Naismith y una rápida participación de Kyle Lafferty que cabeceó al área, Jelavic hizo su trabajo. Tocó el balón y uso el pecho para acomodarlo, hizo un control excelente en el aire y de espaldas al arco lanzó el balón como una bola de fuego que el arquero Jamie Langfield no pudo nunca alcanzar.

Rangers está nuevamente a dos puntos del Celtic y llegará a la punta del torneo si el sabado vence al Saint Mirren. La satisfacción de Walter Smith, en Pittodrie por última vez, fue la obtención de tres puntos.  Su alegría se vio atenuada por las noticias de las lesiones de Vladimir Weiss y Kirk Broadfoot que definitivamente se perderán el resto de la temporada.

Steven Whittaker fue defensa central y Maurice Edu estuvo en el lateral derecho. La selección de Gregg Wylde y Jamie Ness significaba que la mitad de su centro del campo eran jovenes que tenían que hacer el trabajo de hombres. Una vez más, Smith nombró sólo seis substitutos.

A goal from the £4m striker delivered the Co-operative Insurance Cup last month and in the past week he’s been on a one-man mission to keep them in the hunt for the Clydesdale Bank Premier League. He got their only goal in a 1-0 win at the weekend and he pulled it off again last night. This time the finish was remarkable. A stunning overhead kick from Jelavic, his 11th goal in 13 SPL starts for the reigning  champions, gave Rangers a  precious victory over Aberdeen at Pittodrie. It was his fourth goal in five games, three of them winners. Injuries have punctured Jelavic’s first season in Scotland but he has quietly assembled impressive stats. Steven Naismith’s free-kick was flicked to him by Kyle Lafferty, but let’s not kid on that the build-up mattered. It was all Jelavic’s work. His touch and use of his chest to bring the ball under control were excellent, the flick to lift it in the air excellent, and then the gymnastic overhead kick superb as he connected to fire the ball across Jamie Langfield into his far corner.

Rangers are back to within two points of Celtic and will be top of the league if they beat St Mirren on Saturday. The satisfaction for Walter Smith, at Pittodrie for the final time, was in taking the three points.  His joy was tempered by news that injured pair Vladimir Weiss and Kirk Broadfoot will now definitely miss the rest of the season.

Steven Whittaker was in central defence and Maurice Edu at right-back. The selection of Gregg Wylde and Jamie Ness meant half of their midfield four were boys having to do a man’s job. Again Smith named only six subs.
